Jwan Yosef’s work, while minimal in execution, is loaded with political and autobiographical signifiers. Having immigrated with his family from Syria to Stockholm at a young age and being educated in western cultural society, Yosef’s use of imagery in his work ranges from portraits such as of his father Ahmad Yosef, Hollywood actor Rock Hudson to dictator Hafez Al-Assad. Swiftly painting their portraits and distorting the canvas they're painted on, Yosef's work is plastic and malleable; his imagery being reduced or crumpled as he manipulates the canvas. The works become highly self-reflective and personal to Yosef while at the same time commenting on a wider perception of our immediate being and surrounding cultural and political situations.
